Recent studies show that the pandemic made things much worse because of its health and economic impacts on families, isolation, challenges with virtual schooling and ongoing stress and uncertainty. The assistance of Attitudes in Reverse (AIR), school administrators, and school counselors was essential for this research. More youth are experiencing depression and anxiety, and efforts must be made to create awareness and promote help-seeking. An already growing mental health crisis has been accelerated by the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How schools deliver mental health education

The intervention (FRIENDS) consisted of nine lessons delivered to all students in participating classes by trained health facilitators (health-led) or by members of the teaching staff (school-led). For instance, a CBT-based intervention (Stressbusters) implemented in three large secondary schools in South London yielded encouraging findings. Research evidence for the effectiveness of school-based interventions

• If your senior lead is not a member of your SLT, consider whether they have the authority, capacity and support to influence and lead strategic change.
• Specific needs within the school/clinical context for youth with mental disorders are identified and provided through a participative process including different councils (Living Environment School & Day Care Council, Youth Council, Affected Person and Relatives Council).
• The program provides behavioral health services, including assessment, treatment, and referrals, through on-site clinics embedded in public schools in Upper Manhattan.
• NIMH encourages intervention development research when there is a compelling empirical justification for the proposed modification or augmentation.

We also assist teachers in implementing trauma-informed behavior management strategies and teaching coping techniques that foster an engaging learning environment. In recent years, we’ve seen significant improvements in school attendance and academic performance, particularly in math and ELA proficiency. Early identification and intervention can significantly alter a young person’s life trajectory. Dr. Cisneros-Trujillo, a psychiatrist and instructor in psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment are vital for children with psychiatric and behavioral disorders. According to CDC data, nearly 1 in 5 children ages 3-17 have a mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, disruptive behavior disorder, or Tourette syndrome.

“We’ve found that early identification makes a tremendous difference,” shares Sarah Martinez, a school counselor with 15 years of experience. These screenings typically look for signs of anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, or sudden behavioral changes. Families see positive changes at home, with children showing improved communication skills and better emotional regulation.

Student mental health has been a growing concern for years — and for good reasons.

Anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of school-based interventions To tackle this issue, interventions, ideally with a preventative approach, are vital to provide children and young people with the tools they need to handle challenges in their lives. ACF has been working in partnership with young people, parents, and caregivers to design and develop new behavioral health resources, including a mental health video series, an enhanced behavioral health webpage with resources for different audiences, and a tip sheet for parents and caregivers developed by young people. In these past few years, school communities across the state of Maryland have been impacted by new and growing mental health concerns. Training of school staff also enables early identification and intervention, when issues are easier and less costly to treat.
